Aiming for first title, Rockies take down Royals in Game 5 stunner

Updated: Aug 23, 2023

Dylan Werrun awaits a pitch

Game 1: 1-0 Win Rockies

This game was a pitcher's duel between Dallas Patterson and Colton Wiebe who both threw complete games. In the 5th inning, Ryan Anderson attempted a lead off bunt and the Royals' catcher threw the ball into right field causing Anderson to move to third. Leo Jansch got a single to right field to score the only run of the game. The Rockies managed to shut out the Royals, who had only been shut out once this season prior to playoffs.

Game 2: 21-7 Win Royals

Royals dominate this game with their offense. A home run from the Rockies made this game 21-7, but they could not overcome a 20+ run onslaught.

Game 3: 2-0 Rockies

Another pitcher's duel from Max Baxter (complete game shut out) and TJ Trifoli (6+ innings). In the fifth inning, the Rockies managed to load the bases with two out. After a fly ball was dropped by the Royals' shortstop, the Rockies scored the only two runs of the game. The Royals threatened in the 7th with the bases loaded and two out but could not complete the comeback.

Game 4: 7-3 Royals

Kaleb Nantes throws 6 innings and held the Rockies to 3 runs. The Royals struck early in the first inning with 2 runs off of Dallas Patterson and never looked back. At one point, they held a firm lead of 5-0 before giving up 2 runs in the 4th inning to some back-to-back hits, but managed to limit the damage and escape the inning.

Matt Baxter would go on to throw two complete games in this series

Game 5: 5-3 Rockies

Max Baxter comes back to the mound in Game 5 for a gutsy pitching performance, going for the complete game win. After the Royals take an early 3-0 lead in the first inning, the Rockies clawed back a run for themselves. All looked over in the 7th inning when the Rockies staged a comeback, leading off with a base hit from Jesse Blackstock. Max Baxter stole second base after a fielder's choice, and the Rockies 8-hole hitter also got on base when Matt Sheeran, left fielder, stepped up to the plate with 2 outs and down by a run. Matt crushed a ball into the gap, scoring two runs and taking the lead, shortly before scoring himself. The Rockies then shut down in Royals in the bottom of the 7th inning to secure the series-clinching victory and punch their ticket to the 2023 SIBL finals.
